River Lodge Jesenica

Your private Plitvice, just for you

A peaceful riverside retreat

Just you, the water and the silence

Imagine waking up to the sound of the river, coffee on the terrace and a view of untouched nature – no crowds, no noise, no queues. River Lodge Jesenica is a peaceful retreat in Lička Jesenica: a house right on the riverbank, surrounded by forests and the kind of wilderness that has become a true rarity in Europe.

In front of the house flows a river of crystal-clear drinking water of excellent quality. It feels just like Plitvice: the green colour of the water, the freshness and pristine nature – but without thousands of visitors. Just you, the water and the silence. And when you feel like seeing the famous lakes, Plitvice Lakes National Park is about a 30-minute drive away.

With a little luck, you may spot roe deer, a marten or an otter from the house and the terrace, as well as many species of birds. What you see depends on nature, the season and the time of day – and that is exactly what makes every stay special.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Croatia’s best-known national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is about a 30-minute drive away. Sixteen lakes linked by waterfalls, wooden boardwalks over turquoise water and dense beech forests make it one of the most beautiful natural sights in Europe.

Tip: set off early in the morning, before the biggest crowds, and buy your tickets in advance on the park’s official website.

“Izvor voda” circular hiking trail

Get to know the springs of the river you are staying beside. The trail starts in neighbouring Saborsko (you can also set off right from the house) and leads through mountain pastures and pine forests, past a series of smaller and larger springs of drinking water – among them Veliko vrelo and Malo vrelo, where the Jesenica, a karst sinking river, is born. The most impressive is the roaring, powerful Veliko vrelo, while beside Malo vrelo hides a rock bearing a figure reminiscent of the face of Jesus on the Shroud of Turin.

The circular trail is 12.9 km long and not demanding. It can be walked in about 3 hours, but many people devote a whole day to it, stopping again and again to sit down and enjoy. Thanks to the many springs, a small bottle of water and a bite to eat are all you need, along with suitable footwear and long trousers.
